Sin Nombre

Now don't get turned off but Sin Nombre is a Spanish language film directed by Cary Fukunaga. Yes that's right if you see this film you will have to read subtitles but honestly it is worth it! It was actually released in 2009 so this is a bit late but I have only recently fallen in love with Latin American film and I really regret all those years I spent bitching about subtitles because I was really missing out and you are too! Almost every scene of Sin Nombre is tragic, beautiful, exciting, romantic, heartbreaking and uplifting all at once, an art I find has only really be achieved in the cinema of Latin America.

The film is centers around Casper (played by the gorgeous Edgar Flores) a Mexican boy who is a member of the MS13 and growing resentful of gang life, and Sayra (Paulina Gaitán) a Honduran girl being forced to travel illegally with her estranged father and brother to the USA on the roof of a train. The two youths collide through a series of very unfortunate events and strike up an unlikely friendship. Both Casper and Sayra are desperately trying to take control of their own lives and face many adversities along their quest for independent identities.

The real draw of this film is the way it's made. It's very like  Y Tu Mama Tambien or The Motorcycle Diaries in the sense that is it technically a road film but also it takes a very simple humanistic plot line and sets it against the backdrop of a continent in turmoil. Fukunaga has followed in the footsteps of  Salles, Cuaron and many others before him and used the power of film to showcase South American problems to the world in a contemporary and entertaining fashion.
If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it and if you're interested in getting in to Latin American cinema heres a list of my favorite films from down south-believe me you won't regret it!

La Ciénaga

The Motorcycle Diaries

Y Tu Mama Tambien

City of God

Soy Cuba

Amores Perros

Federico Chiesa-Horror Vacui

This is a collection of very cool photos depicting an array of movie villains in their old age. The project, created by Federico Chiesa is more or less the same kind of thing that always pops up on the internet every couple of months but I really like this one. Old age is pretty much the most vulnerable stage of most people's lives and looking at these freaks who have haunted us since childhood as harmless ol' folks is kind of soothing!

Plus the one of Vader is actually adorable look at his little hot water bottle ooojjoo!!

Ben and Jerry's Supports Gay Marriage

Ben and Jerry's, known for their delicious but overpriced ice cream have renamed their Oh! My! Apple! Pie! ice cream to Apple-y Ever After in support of gay marriage. So now instead of apples and a friendly caterpillar, the carton features two men on top of a wedding cake decorated with the Rainbow flag.
Very cute pic and the ice cream sounds really nice, I'd never heard of it before but mmm chunks of pie crust

The Candy Woman at Junk Kouture 2012

My little sister Vicki is one of the finalists for the 2012 Junk Kouture fashion competition. She has spent hours creating this amazing ensemble called "The Candy Woman" out of... well, Junk.
She's going to be showing the outfit at the fashion show on Sunday but one of the categories to determine the winner is online voting so please vote for Vicki

Thank you :)

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON

How have I never seen this before??

This is what I think would happen if Michael Cera and Debbie Downer somehow had a sea shell baby....

wtf Marc Jacobs..wtf

Continuing with barmy fashion choices for men, here is the usually gorgeous and incredibly fashionable Marc Jacobs at Paris fashion week in a giant see through salmon pink polo shirt wearing yellow boxers and leprechaun shoes with socks.

I don't think there's anything else to say really.... except obviously that if this is what the summer trend is then I CAN'T WAIT

Much More Importantly...

Back to business,

THESE my friends are tights for men, I kid you not.

Otherwise known as "mantyhose" "brosiery" or "guylons", the tights are designed by Emilio Cavallini who specializes in gaudy hosiery so yeh I think you know why you have probably never heard of him...

If you're interested in purchasing a pair of these skin tight wonders you can do so HERE for the bargain price of 18euro!

Visible Children

For fear of being called a fascist again by "Anonymous" I deleted my earlier post but I'll just leave up the most important part of my criticism of the Kony2012 campaign which is this:

You cannot link that on facebook for some reason... NOW who's the fascist??

Edit: The page is no longer blocked on Facebook it would seem, great news!

Bard Fiction - Shakespeare does Tarantino

This is pretty funny if you like Tarantino and you're mad for Shakespeare, its Pulp Fiction but done on stage and in the style of a Shakespearean play its quite old, in fact its actually from the 2009 Minnesota fringe festival but it has resurfaced as of late - don't really know why

It's long but a Shakespeare buff should enjoy!

The Shade Parade

This little gem is an advert for Chanel nail polish and in typical Chanel fashion it's no ordinary ad! It's actually from September of last year but I just saw it today and thought I had to post it up! I caught myself grinning at the screen a bunch of times over the course of the two minutes and I have no doubt that you will too! Have a watch there!
